‘Maybe Jek was the father of Evelyn’s baby and he couldn’t handle the responsibility and he killed her,’ was Connie’s suggestion when Miss Moorthy told her the story. ‘Your Anthony said that with a rope you don’t have to be very strong to strangle someone, right? He said even a woman could have done it. So Jek could have. Maybe it was his baby and he killed her because she wanted to pass it off as David’s.’

‘He’s not my Anthony,’ Miss Moorthy said automatically. ‘And I suspect Jek is strong enough to strangle anybody he wants to, actually. But I don’t think he killed Evelyn. And I don’t think he can be the father of her baby either.’

Jek had other ways of destroying people, Miss Moorthy thought. It must have been terrible for Evelyn to look at Jek’s paintings and see what he thought of her. But was it possible that Evelyn had not seen what was so obvious to Miss Moorthy? Miss Moorthy knew Evelyn had always been more interested in giving the ‘correct’ response than saying what she thought. So no, Evelyn might have thought only that Jek enjoyed painting her. She might have looked at the terrible painting that had so frightened Miss Moorthy and seen only the pretty bridal gown, not the bulge it covered.
